The music is blaring and the atmosphere is brilliant. I’ve always liked this pub. You can always guarantee when you go there you will bump into at least one person you know. And this evening is exactly like that. Lots of people from school, girls who still fancy Gav, some of whom have reined it in a little now that it’s obvious he’s out with Kate, others who are being overly obvious – probably because they know he has money now. Stevie is by my side the entire night, dancing with me and buying me more drinks. Actually, he’s been buying all of us drinks for most of the night and I wonder if he’s doing it to impress me or my brother. I notice how my brother isn’t the only man in the pub receiving attention from the girls. Stevie is, too, although I don’t think he’s noticed. If he has, he’s being very quiet about it.

‘Another?’ he says in my ear and when his lips brush again me, a shock of electricity shoots through me and I turn and kiss him. Just a quick peck, nothing too full on in the middle of the pub. He smiles and heads to the bar. I watch Kate as she sits in the corner with Gav. He has his body turned towards her and his arm over the back of the seat. She’s smiling and when she makes eye contact with me I wink and give her a thumbs up but she doesn’t respond, only looks away.

‘Here,’ Stevie catches my attention and hands me a drink. ‘I’ll be back in a minute.’ He disappears again and a few seconds later he is carrying drinks over to Gav and Kate’s table.

I look down at my drink and before I can stop myself, the glass is empty. I grab Stevie’s hands and start dancing with him as the music pumps louder in my ears. The thud of the beat vibrates in my chest and I close my eyes as Stevie pulls me closer.

After that, everything is just a blur.
